I blend modern dance, movement therapy/ anatomy awareness, bodywork techniques, yoga, and obviously twerking in many of its forms. My tiered warm-up is also pretty bad-ass, definitely increasing tone and agility. Once the warm blood is flowing freely, I lead the people through a set of anatomically mindful stretching. Then there’s a slow build of exercises to help ease them into a specific focus or pattern of twerking for the session (bounce, windin, slow twerk, partnering, twerking for performance, locomoting through space, etc).

Though I lead the folks through movement phrases to help them find the twerk in their own bodies, I almost never put choreography into the session in a direct effort to build an open environment of body positivity. I’m not teaching or passing out grades, but making it easier for people to explore their anatomy and its capacity. We can discuss this in more detail if you like, but I definitely prefer a facilitation as opposed to teaching model — it’s also a part of how I address the spectre of appropriation.

Cost 35$ Each Class or 60$ for both.

Course Description:

3:00 – 4:30 pm Fundamental– Blending the basics of movement therapy, a warm-up of pilates and yoga, and the art of twerk in its many forms, The Lady B will guide you through a series of twerking tools to increase your visceral vocabulary in a purposefully non-appropriative setting. You will learn to question, with your mind and body, how you can navigate this Africanist movement in a body-affirming way outside of the standard Euro-centric dance studio choreography context. The Lady will invite you to build your core strength, explore the capacity of your anatomy, and celebrate your booty.

4:45 – 6:15 pm Embodied Practice– Building upon the framework of the “Finding Your Twerk,” The Lady will help you navigate the journey from the fundamentals to integrated practice of twerk. With a more physically demanding warm-up of pilates and yoga coupled with full-body awareness exercises, you will be provided with the tools to experience twerking as body celebration. Whether the ritual space is a club dance floor, alone at home, basement parties, or inside your head, this advanced course will provide the nuanced tools to embody the twerk.
